One of the most fun things you can do with your hoverboard is to play your favorite tunes while you’re on the move.
Thankfully, it’s not that hard to do. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about playing your favorite tunes through your hoverboard and look at whether or not it’s worth buying a hoverboard with a speaker.
How does it work?
Playing audio through your hoverboard is no different from playing tracks through any Bluetooth speaker. You connect the hoverboard to your phone over Bluetooth and then your phone will send or ‘stream’ music to the speaker built into the hoverboard.
There’s no lag and you don’t need to use a special app. You also don’t need to be in the range of your Wifi as it uses Bluetooth to send the data.
Your phone will have to stay within range of the hoverboard, as with any Bluetooth device, there’s a limited range that it will work from. This isn’t a problem if you’re the rider but you might have to jog a bit to keep up with the children.
The range might vary between hoverboards but is generally around 30 feet, although you can get cutouts and stuttering at the outsides of that range.
Hoverboards that come with speakers aren’t generally more expensive either.
How do you play music on a hoverboard?
Playing music through your hoverboard is quick and easy to set up.
- Open up your phone and go to Bluetooth settings.
- Follow instructions with your board on how to put it into connection mode.
- On your phone, click on the name that pops up. They can have a weird name but you should be able to spot it!
- It should say that your hoverboard is now paired with your phone.
- Any audio that would normally come from your phone’s speaker will now be broadcast to the world via your hoverboard.
Do all hoverboards play music?
Not every hoverboard plays music. Most new ones will have this feature but it’s not a standard feature on all of them.
To make matters more confusing, we’ve seen some product descriptions mention that a hoverboard does have a speaker when it doesn’t!
To avoid buying a musical board for your child’s birthday, only to find out it doesn’t play tunes, check for any negative reviews. It is rare that this happens, but I’ve seen it come up before. It’s a good idea to double-check the board you’re getting really does have a built-in speaker.
Is it worth getting a musical hoverboard?
It’s definitely good fun having a hoverboard that can play your music.
There are also some uses other than the equivalent of driving along with your car window down and the stereo turned up.
If you’re meeting friends, it’s good to have some way to play music that’s louder than what your phone speaker can do.
A hoverboard with a speaker is like having your own mobile disco. Great for annoying, I mean entertaining, family and friends.
Although most modern smartphones have a fairly impressive volume, the sound quality you’ll get from a hoverboard (as strange as that sounds) is a lot louder and better and is more suited for outdoors.
Your children will likely enjoy these hoverboards
Along with LED lights, which have become a staple of hoverboards, speakers are a good feature to get if you’re buying for a child. You can pair it with their iPad, or your phone and play their favourite tunes while they ride around the house or the local park.
Just be ready for other kids and parents to come over and ask you where you got it. Hoverboards still have that kind of new, gadget thing about them, especially if they’re zooming around with the LED light blinking and playing music.

Most hoverboards don’t have two speakers and aren’t stereo. Although people often refer to speakers plural, you’ll generally find hoverboards have a single speaker.

If you’ve already bought your hoverboard
The best way to check if your hoverboard has speakers is to check if it is Bluetooth. Switch on your phone and go to Bluetooth settings and check if your hoverboard shows up under available devices.
If you’ve not bought it yet
Just search Amazon for either:

or
music hoverboard
And you should get a (fairly overwhelming!) number of boards to choose from. You can of course filter by things like the star rating and budget to narrow things down a bit.
How loud are the speakers on hoverboards
The built-in speaker on hoverboards is actually louder than you might think. You should be able to hear them from another room, or even another floor.
What are some uses other than playing music?
When you pair your phone to your Bluetooth speaker, any audio that normally comes from your phone will be played through the speaker in the hoverboard. One cool thing you can do with this is to use your phone’s GPS and google maps to get somewhere (either for fun or to get around a new city).
There’s nothing like driving along while your hoverboard shouts out “turn left!”.
