Best Folding Electrical Bikes for 2022

Collapsible eBike bike shoppers guide

Here’s a quick run down of the things you should be on the look out for when picking your new eBike. Some of these are obvious but by the end of it, you should be up to speed and be able to balance price with the features you want.

Motor size

Let’s kick this guide off with the big stats to look for first, starting with the motor. Like any electric ride-on, bikes will have a motor that’s measured in Watts (W).

Battery

Until something new comes along, electric bikes use lithium-Ion batteries to power the motor.

What’s my top speed?

Modern eBikes can get up to 15 – 30 miles per hour. Pretty fast!

How far can you get per charge?

Another good spec to compare when looking at eBikes is how many miles you can get out of each charge. Look for at least 15 miles per charge. Plenty of scope to get to work, or have a good day’s adventuring! You can, of course, always pedal back if you get stuck.

Off-road or on-road electric bikes

Another thing to think about with your new bike is where you’ll be using it. e-bikes will typically fall into 3 categories:

  • On-road
  • Off-road
  • Hybrids

As a general rule, the thicker the tyres, and the larger the wheels, the better suited it will be to off-road use. And the suspension is a must if you’re taking the bike off-road. (more on that below).

If you want a bike that won’t throw a hissy fit on a bumpy trail or two, go for something with 20″ wheels and nice thick 2″ tyres at least.

What’s the frame made of?

As with regular non-powered bikes out there, their powered up electric siblings have frames made from a range of materials. Common materials are:

  • Aluminium – cheap but heavy

What’s the front fork made of?

Sometimes with eBikes, the frame material will differ to the fork, with the tougher material being used on the front fork. This part of your new bike will take a lot of strain so it’s important it’s up to the task. Look for carbon steel here.

What kinds of things do you need to know before buying?

Is it easy to pick up?

Brake type

The main types are

  • Brake disc

Wheel size

As with any bike, you’ll need to know the wheel size of your new eBike.

Folded dimensions

Weight

Suspension

You’ll normally get either front and rear, or front only suspension on an eBike, although it’s not uncommon to find some bikes that don’t have any. If you want the most comfy ride possible, then we recommend looking for an eBike with at least front suspension.

It will pay dividends on those bumpy roads, especially when you’re going at a bit of a clip. You’re arms will thank you later.

How easy is it to fold

This sounds ridiculously obvious but there’s no current set standard for how an eBike should actually fold. Each has their own method.

Assembly required

If there’s one thing I like to read it’s that an ebike comes ‘90% assembled’. Also check if assembly is charged as extra and how much it costs.
